Narendra Prasad

Biography

Narendra Prasad was a prominent Indian actor, playwright, literary critic and academic who worked mainly in Malayalam cinema and theatre. He was born on 26 December 1946 in Mavelikkara, Kerala, and died on 3 November 2003 in Kottayam, Kerala.

 

He began his career in academia and literature before becoming active in theatre. Prasad founded the theatre group Natyagriham and wrote and directed several stage plays. His background in literature and theatre strongly influenced his acting style.

 

Narendra Prasad entered Malayalam cinema in the late 1980s and became particularly famous for portraying powerful antagonists, authoritative figures and complex character roles. His notable films include Nadodikkattu (1987), Devasuram (1993), Mannar Mathai Speaking (1995), Ekalavyan (1993), Thalasthanam (1992), Aaram Thamburan (1997), Pathram (1999) and Ustaad (1999).

 

He received the Kerala State Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Paithrukam (1993). His commanding voice and distinctive screen presence made him one of the most memorable character actors of Malayalam cinema during the 1990s.

 

Narendra Prasad also continued his literary activities alongside acting, contributing essays, criticism and plays to Malayalam literature. His career encompassed academia, literature, theatre and cinema, making him a highly respected figure in Kerala's cultural landscape.
