Ncuti Gatwa
Biography
Ncuti Gatwa was born on 15 October 1992 in Nyarugenge, Kigali, Rwanda. He is a Rwandan-Scottish actor known for his work in television, film, and theatre. His family moved to Scotland when he was a child, and he later studied acting at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Gatwa gained international recognition for playing Eric Effiong in Netflix's Sex Education (2019–2023). His performance earned him a Scottish BAFTA and three consecutive BAFTA Television Award nominations for Best Male Comedy Performance.
His film career includes The Last Letter from Your Lover (2021), Barbie (2023), in which he played one of the Kens, and The Roses (2025). He also appeared in the Apple TV+ miniseries Masters of the Air (2024).
In 2022, Gatwa was announced as the Fifteenth Doctor in Doctor Who. He made his first full appearance as the Doctor on Christmas Day 2023 and became the first Black actor to lead the long-running series. His performance earned him a BAFTA Cymru Award for Best Actor.
With his success in Sex Education, Doctor Who, Barbie, and theatre, Gatwa has established himself as one of the prominent actors of his generation.
