Ned Dowd

Biography

Ned Dowd is an American film producer, actor, and former ice hockey player known for his contributions to both sports-themed and dramatic films. Born in 1950 in the United States, Dowd grew up with a strong passion for hockey, which played a pivotal role in shaping the early part of his life and career.

Dowd attended Bowdoin College in Maine, where he played collegiate hockey before briefly pursuing the sport professionally in the minor leagues. His experience in the world of hockey would later inspire one of the most iconic sports films ever made—Slap Shot (1977)

The movie, written by his sister Nancy Dowd, was based on Ned’s real-life experiences as a player in the rough-and-tumble minor league circuit. Ned not only inspired the story but also appeared in the film as Ogie Oglethorpe, one of the notorious “bad boys” of hockey.

Following his acting debut, Dowd transitioned into film production, where he established himself as a skilled and reliable producer and production manager. Over the years, he worked on numerous major Hollywood films, developing a strong reputation for his ability to manage complex productions. His credits include well-known titles such as Apocalypto (2006), Last of the Mohicans (1992), Shanghai Noon (2000), and King Arthur (2004), among others.
