Nicholas King Nolte (born February 8, 1941) is an American actor recognized for his distinctive gravelly voice and ability to portray characters with tough exteriors yet complex, often sensitive, inner lives. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Nolte was a talented athlete in his youth, attending various colleges on a football scholarship. However, poor grades ultimately led him away from athletics and toward acting. He trained at the Pasadena Playhouse and the Stella Adler Academy in Los Angeles. Before achieving screen success, Nolte spent several years working in regional theater and also worked as a male model.
