Biography

Nikhil S. Praveen hails from Mattakkara in the Kottayam district of Kerala. He began his career working in wedding videography, which allowed him to develop skills in composition, lighting, and storytelling through imagery. After gaining experience in short films and documentaries, he transitioned into feature film cinematography. He also studied at the Cochin Media School to refine his technical skills.

Career Breakthrough & Style

His breakthrough came with the film Bhayanakam (2017), directed by Jayaraj. This was his first full-length feature as a cinematographer and earned him the National Film Award for Best Cinematography. Nikhil is known for his sensitive use of natural light, landscapes—especially water-bound locales—and creating atmospheric visuals that enhance a film’s emotional tone. Scenes such as the early-morning shots and rice-field vistas in Bhayanakam exemplify this approach.
