Nirmal Sahadev
Biography
Nirmal Sahadev is an Indian film director and screenwriter who works primarily in Malayalam cinema. He made his directorial debut with the 2019 Malayalam action thriller Ranam: Detroit Crossing, starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, Isha Talwar, and Rahman.
Before becoming a director, Sahadev worked in the film industry in various capacities and was involved in the writing and development of Ranam. The film was set in Detroit and explored the lives of people involved in the city's automobile and drug underworld. It received attention for its international setting, action sequences, and stylized presentation.
Sahadev later directed the Malayalam film Kumari (2022), a folk-horror mystery starring Aishwarya Lekshmi, Shine Tom Chacko, Surabhi Lakshmi, and Swasika Vijay. The film drew on Kerala folklore and explored themes of tradition, patriarchy, superstition, and female agency.
His filmmaking is characterized by crime-oriented narratives, atmospheric settings, and stories involving characters caught between violence and the possibility of redemption. Through Ranam and Kumari, Nirmal Sahadev established himself as a distinctive voice among contemporary Malayalam filmmakers.
