Biography

Oh Yeong-su is a veteran South Korean actor whose decades-long career in theatre, film, and television earned him global recognition later in life. Born on October 19, 1944, he developed a deep passion for the performing arts at a young age and began his journey in theatre during the 1960s. Over the years, he became a respected figure in Korean stage acting, known for his emotional depth, thoughtful delivery, and dedication to classical and contemporary plays.

 

 

Although Oh appeared in several films and dramas throughout his career, his work largely remained within the world of theatre, where he built a reputation for his disciplined craft and compelling performances. His film credits include supporting roles in acclaimed historical and dramatic projects, showcasing his ability to embody wise, introspective, and often spiritually grounded characters.

 

 

Oh Yeong-su achieved international fame with his portrayal of Oh Il-nam, the seemingly gentle and mysterious Player 001, in the groundbreaking series Squid Game (2021). His performance—marked by warmth, subtlety, and surprising complexity—captivated audiences worldwide. For this role, he won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor, becoming the first Korean actor to receive the honour.
