Biography
Omung Kumar Bhandula, popularly known as Omung Kumar, is an acclaimed Indian film director, production designer, and art director, best known for his visually striking work and powerful storytelling in Bollywood cinema.
Early Life and Education
Omung Kumar was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. Before stepping into direction, he studied art and design, which laid the foundation for his later success in production design and filmmaking. His creative background gave him a strong sense of visual aesthetics that became his signature style in films.
Career in Television and Art Direction
Omung first gained popularity as the host of the television show “Ek Minute” on Zee TV in the 1990s. Later, he established himself as one of Bollywood’s top art directors and production designers, contributing to several hit films such as Black (2005), Saawariya (2007), and Yuvvraaj (2008). His eye for detail and elaborate set designs earned him great respect in the industry.
Directorial Debut and Success
Omung Kumar made his directorial debut with “Mary Kom” (2014), a biographical sports drama starring Priyanka Chopra as Olympic boxer Mary Kom. The film was both a critical and commercial success, earning him the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.
He followed it up with “Sarbjit” (2016), a biopic based on the true story of Sarabjit Singh, featuring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Randeep Hooda. The film was praised for its emotional depth and strong performances.
In 2017, Omung directed “Bhoomi”, starring Sanjay Dutt and Aditi Rao Hydari — a revenge drama exploring themes of justice and father-daughter relationships.
Personal Life
Omung is married to Vanita Omung Kumar, who is also a well-known set designer and art director. Together, they have worked on numerous projects in film and television.
