Padmakumar Narasimhamurthy

Biography

N. Padmakumar, popularly known as Paddy or Padma, is an Indian filmmaker, writer, photographer and former advertising professional. With a career spanning advertising, television and feature films, he has developed a reputation for combining visual storytelling with socially relevant and emotionally engaging narratives.

 

 

Advertising Career

Before entering filmmaking, Padmakumar spent 17 years in the advertising industry. He served as the Country Creative Head of Rediffusion Dentsu, Young & Rubicam, one of India's major advertising agencies.

During his advertising career, he worked with prominent international agencies including Lintas and McCann Erickson, where he led large creative teams and developed high-profile campaigns for major brands. His work earned him numerous awards and industry recognition.

In 2012, he left advertising to pursue filmmaking and storytelling more directly.

 

 

Filmmaking Debut

Padmakumar made his feature-film debut with A Billion Colour Story, a project in which he took on multiple creative responsibilities as writer, cinematographer and director.

The film received recognition at several prestigious international film festivals. It was nominated in the New Currents selection at the Busan International Film Festival and was an official selection at the BFI London International Film Festival. It also received a Best of Fest nomination at the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

The film went on to receive 17 awards and citations at various festivals before becoming available to a wider audience through Netflix.

 

 

Television and Digital Work

Padmakumar subsequently moved into television and digital storytelling. He created Thinkistan, an Indian series released on MX Player. Set against the backdrop of the advertising industry, the show explored workplace relationships, ambition, competition and personal aspirations.

Thinkistan received positive responses for its portrayal of the advertising world and demonstrated Padmakumar's ability to translate his professional experience into fictional storytelling.

 

 

Other Film Projects

Padmakumar also developed Distant Teardrop, a feature film set between Sri Lanka and England. The project represented another international dimension to his filmmaking career and continued his interest in stories that cross geographical and cultural boundaries.

 

 

Education and Other Interests

Padmakumar holds an M.Sc. in Statistics and Computer Programming. His academic background contrasts with his creative career, reflecting his interests in both analytical and artistic disciplines.

Outside filmmaking, he is an enthusiastic sportsman, photographer and poet. His photography and poetry further complement his interest in visual and written storytelling.
