Park Chan Wook
Biography
Park Chan-wook is a South Korean film director, screenwriter, producer, and former film critic, born on August 23, 1963, in Seoul, South Korea. He studied philosophy at Sogang University, where he developed a strong interest in cinema and film theory. He later entered the film industry, working as an assistant director before beginning his own directing career.
His breakthrough came with Joint Security Area (2000), a thriller about the relationship between North and South Korean soldiers. The film became a major commercial success in South Korea and established Park as an important filmmaker.
Park gained worldwide recognition through his acclaimed Vengeance Trilogy, consisting of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002), Oldboy (2003), and Lady Vengeance (2005). Oldboy became an international sensation and won the Grand Prix at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, significantly raising Park's profile internationally.
He continued with films including I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK (2006), Thirst (2009), Stoker (2013), and The Handmaiden (2016). The Handmaiden, a psychological thriller adapted from Sarah Waters' novel Fingersmith, received widespread international acclaim and won the BAFTA for Best Film Not in the English Language.
His film Decision to Leave (2022), starring Park Hae-il and Tang Wei, combined mystery, crime, and romance. Park won the Best Director Award at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival for the film.
Park has also worked extensively as a producer and television filmmaker. His credits include producing Snowpiercer (2013) and executive producing the television adaptation, as well as directing the BBC miniseries The Little Drummer Girl (2018). He later co-created, directed, and served as showrunner on HBO's The Sympathizer (2024).
His later film No Other Choice (2025) marked another major addition to his filmography, with Park serving as director and screenwriter. The film blends thriller and comedy and further demonstrates his interest in morally complicated characters and darkly satirical storytelling.
Park Chan-wook is particularly recognized for his precise visual composition, dark humor, psychological complexity, stylized violence, and morally ambiguous characters. His work has played a major role in bringing contemporary South Korean cinema to international audiences.
