Paul Ford

Biography

Paul Ford (November 2, 1901 – April 12, 1976) was an American actor best known for his distinctive comic performances as stern military officers, judges, executives, and other gruff authority figures. Born Paul Ford Weaver in Baltimore, Maryland, he initially attended Dartmouth College but left before graduating and worked as a salesman during the Great Depression. He did not enter professional acting until his early 40s.

Ford developed his theatrical skills through stage work and puppetry before finding success in Broadway productions. His performance in the play The Teahouse of the August Moon brought him considerable recognition, and he later recreated his stage role of Col. Wainwright Purdy III in the 1956 film adaptation.

He became especially famous on television for playing Colonel John T. Hall in the classic sitcom The Phil Silvers Show (1955–1959). Appearing in 143 episodes, Ford's stern and easily exasperated Colonel Hall provided a perfect comic contrast to Phil Silvers' scheming Master Sergeant Bilko.

Ford also appeared in several major films, including The Teahouse of the August Moon (1956), The Music Man (1962), It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963), Never Too Late (1965), A Big Hand for the Little Lady (1966), and The Comedians (1967). His imposing appearance and deadpan delivery made him a memorable character actor.

He received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Play for Never Too Late in 1963. Ford continued working in film and television until his retirement in 1972. He died of heart failure in Mineola, New York, on April 12, 1976, at the age of 74.
