Peeli Sivam

Biography

Peeli Sivam was an Indian actor known for his extensive work in Tamil cinema, theatre, and television. Born P. L. Sivanappan on 5 July 1938 in Erode, Tamil Nadu, he had a career spanning several decades and appeared in more than 200 films, in addition to numerous stage productions and television serials.

Early Life and Theatre Career

Peeli Sivam developed an interest in acting during childhood. His passion for theatre eventually brought him into contact with M. G. Ramachandran, who encouraged him to pursue a career on stage. He became associated with several prominent theatre groups, including National Theatres, Seva Stage, the Manorama troupe and Stage Friends.

His extensive theatre experience helped him develop the strong dialogue delivery and characterisation that later became important features of his film performances.

Film Career

Peeli Sivam gradually moved from theatre to Tamil cinema and became a prolific supporting and character actor. He appeared in films across several decades, often portraying authoritative figures, villains, and other strong supporting characters.

His notable films include Muhammad bin Tughluq (1971), Malligai Poo (1973), Shankar Saleem Simon (1978), En Kelvikku Enna Bathil (1978), Doorathu Idi Muzhakkam (1980), Poi Saatchi (1982), Mundhanai Mudichu (1983), Imaigal (1983), Azhagan (1991), Ejamaan (1993) and Vetri Vinayagar (1996).

In Doorathu Idi Muzhakkam, he played Maari alongside Vijayakanth and Poornima. He also appeared in several films featuring Vijayakanth, including Captain Prabhakaran, Nenjile Thunivirunthaal, Periya Marudhu and Virudhagiri.

Television Career

Peeli Sivam also became a familiar face on Tamil television. He appeared in Doordarshan productions before moving into television serials. His credits included Aachi International, Oru Pennin Kadhai, Vaazhkai, Aasai, Sorgam, Kana Kaanum Kaalangal, Thirumathi Selvam and Uravugal.

His performances as Annachi in Vaazhkai, Periyappa in Thirumathi Selvam and Annamalai in Uravugal were among his recognizable television roles.

Awards and Recognition

In 1995, Peeli Sivam received the Kalaimamani Award from the Government of Tamil Nadu for his contribution to drama. He was also honoured with a Tamil Nadu Government Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009.

Death

Peeli Sivam died on 25 September 2017 in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, at the age of 79. He had remained active across Tamil theatre, films and television for much of his life.
