Biography
Peter Fonda was an American actor, director, and writer who became a defining figure of the counterculture film movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Known for his rebellious screen persona and creative independence, he left a lasting impact on American cinema.
Born on February 23, 1940, in New York City, Peter Fonda was the son of legendary actor Henry Fonda and the younger brother of actress Jane Fonda. He grew up surrounded by the film industry, though he initially struggled to emerge from his father’s shadow. Fonda studied acting at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and later refined his skills in theater.
Fonda rose to prominence as a symbol of the 1960s counterculture with the landmark film Easy Rider (1969), which he co-wrote, produced, and starred in. The film’s success revolutionized Hollywood by proving that low-budget, director-driven projects could achieve both critical acclaim and commercial success.
Throughout his career, Fonda appeared in a wide range of films, including The Wild Angels, Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry, Ulee’s Gold, and 3:10 to Yuma (2007). His performance in Ulee’s Gold earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, marking a major late-career resurgence.
