Biography

Peter Mullan is a Scottish actor and filmmaker, born on November 2, 1959, in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. He grew up in Glasgow and developed an interest in acting while studying at the University of Glasgow, where he became involved in theatre and student productions.

 

Mullan began his professional career in Scottish theatre before moving into film and television. He gained early recognition for his performances in films such as Riff-Raff (1991), Braveheart (1995), Trainspotting (1996), My Name Is Joe (1998), and Orphans (1998).

 

His performance as Joe in My Name Is Joe earned him the Best Actor Award at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival. As a filmmaker, he wrote and directed Orphans and later directed The Magdalene Sisters (2002), a powerful drama about women confined to abusive institutions in Ireland. The film won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.

 

Mullan has also enjoyed a successful television career. His credits include Top of the Lake, The Fear, Ozark, Westworld, Cursed, The Underground Railroad, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. He appeared in The Underground Railroad (2021), Barry Jenkins' acclaimed Amazon limited series based on Colson Whitehead's novel.

 

His film work has continued with appearances in Children of Men (2006), War Horse (2011), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 (2010), Sunshine on Leith (2013), Hostiles (2017), and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
