P. Padmarajan

Biography

P. Padmarajan (1945–1991) was an acclaimed Indian filmmaker, screenwriter and author who worked predominantly in Malayalam cinema. He was one of the leading figures of the Malayalam New Wave and was known for realistic storytelling, complex characters and unconventional themes.

Born on 23 May 1945 in Muthukulam, Kerala, Padmarajan initially worked in government service before turning to literature. He began his writing career as a novelist and short-story writer, earning recognition for his distinctive style and exploration of human relationships.

He entered cinema as a screenwriter and wrote several influential films, including Prayanam (1975), Thakara (1979) and Kallan Pavithran (1981). He made his directorial debut with Peruvazhiyambalam (1979), which became a landmark film in Malayalam cinema.

Padmarajan went on to direct acclaimed films such as Koodevide?, Thinkalazhcha Nalla Divasam, Namukku Parkkan Munthiri Thoppukal, Thovanathumbikal, Aparan, Moonnam Pakkam and Innale. His films frequently dealt with love, loneliness, desire, family relationships and the contradictions of human nature.

He collaborated with several prominent Malayalam actors, including Mammootty, Mohanlal, Bharath Gopi, Shobana and Sukumaran. His films and screenplays remain highly regarded for their emotional depth, literary quality and memorable characters.

Padmarajan died on 24 January 1991, aged 45. Despite his relatively short career, he left a lasting influence on Malayalam cinema and is remembered as one of its most important filmmakers and writers.
