Pradeep Sarkar

Biography

Pradeep Sarkar was born in Kolkata and graduated from the Delhi College of Art in 1979, earning a gold medal for his outstanding work. He began his career in advertising, where he spent nearly two decades as a creative and art director before moving into filmmaking. His early background in design and advertising shaped his distinctive visual storytelling style.

 

 

Career Beginnings

Sarkar started by directing advertisements and music videos, quickly establishing himself as one of the most creative minds in the Indian ad industry. Over his career, he directed more than 1,000 commercials for major brands such as Tata Yellow Pages, ICICI Prudential, and Onida.

In addition to ads, he directed several memorable music videos, including:

 

Ab Ke Saawan by Shubha Mudgal

Dhoom Pichak Dhoom and Maaeri by Euphoria

Piya Basanti by Sultan Khan and K.S. Chithra

Ganga by Bhupen Hazarika

These projects earned him critical acclaim and recognition for his creative direction and visual flair.

 

 

Film Career

Pradeep Sarkar made his feature film debut with Parineeta (2005), a romantic drama starring Vidya Balan, Saif Ali Khan, and Sanjay Dutt. The film was a major success and won him the National Film Award for Best Debut Director. It also earned several Filmfare Awards and established him as a director known for strong storytelling and rich visual aesthetics.

Following Parineeta, Sarkar directed several other notable films:

 

Laaga Chunari Mein Daag (2007) – a story centered on a woman’s struggle for survival and dignity.

Lafangey Parindey (2010) – a romantic drama set in Mumbai’s lower-middle-class neighborhoods.

 

Mardaani (2014) – a hard-hitting action drama starring Rani Mukerji as a fearless police officer.

Helicopter Eela (2018) – a light-hearted family drama starring Kajol.

He also explored digital storytelling, directing web series such as Coldd Lassi Aur Chicken Masala, Forbidden Love, and Duranga, further showcasing his versatility as a filmmaker.
