Early Life

Qamar Jalalabadi was born as Om Prakash Bhandari on 9 March 1917 in Jalalabad, Punjab, British India (now in Pakistan). He developed an interest in poetry at a young age and adopted the pen name Qamar Jalalabadi, inspired by his birthplace. His early exposure to literature and Urdu poetry shaped his writing style.

Career

Qamar Jalalabadi began his career as a poet and later entered the Hindi film industry as a lyricist. He wrote lyrics for his first film Zameen (1946), beginning a long and successful association with Indian cinema.

During his career, he worked with many legendary music composers and singers, creating memorable songs that became popular among generations of listeners. His lyrics were known for their emotional depth, romantic expression, and ability to connect with ordinary people.
