Biography

Raaj Kumar was one of the most distinctive actors in Hindi cinema, celebrated for his commanding screen presence, powerful voice, and memorable dialogue delivery. Over a career spanning more than four decades, he appeared in numerous critically acclaimed and commercially successful films, earning a reputation as one of Bollywood's finest performers.

Born as Kulbhushan Pandit on 8 October 1926 in Loralai, Baluchistan (now in Pakistan), Raaj Kumar worked as a sub-inspector in the Mumbai Police before entering the film industry. He made his acting debut with Rangili (1952), but it was Mother India (1957) that brought him widespread recognition.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Raaj Kumar delivered several memorable performances in films such as Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai (1960), Gharana (1961), Dil Ek Mandir (1963), Waqt (1965), Hamraaz (1967), Heer Raanjha (1970), Pakeezah (1972), Hindustan Ki Kasam (1973), Karmayogi (1978), and Bulundi (1981). He later earned critical acclaim for his roles in Marte Dam Tak (1987), Saudagar (1991), and Tirangaa (1993).

Known for his unique style and unforgettable one-liners, Raaj Kumar became one of the most recognizable personalities in Indian cinema. His performances were marked by dignity, intensity, and charisma, making him a favorite among audiences and filmmakers alike.

During his career, he received several honors, including the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for Waqt (1965). His contribution to Hindi cinema remains significant, and many of his films continue to be regarded as classics.

Raaj Kumar passed away on 3 July 1996 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, at the age of 69 after battling throat cancer. He is remembered as one of the most iconic actors in the history of Indian cinema, whose distinctive acting style and dialogue delivery continue to influence generations of performers.
