Rahul Bose
Biography
Mostly known as the superstar of Indian arthouse cinema, Rahul Bose is an Indian actor, director, screenwriter, philanthropist, and rugby player. He is famous for starring in films like Mr. and Mrs. Iyer, Kalpurush, Chameli, The Japanese Wife, and English August.
The actor is also actively involved with social causes and is the founder of an NGO called The Foundation, an NGO devoted to the removal of discrimination from all walks of life.
Rahul began his acting career with Rahul D`Cunha`s stage play Topsy Turvey and Are There Tigers In The Congo? After debuting with the English language Indian film The Perfect Murder, Rahul next starred in Dev Benegal`s film English, August, an adaptation of the novel by the same name.
The movie gained a lot of international critical acclaim and was the first Indian film that was bought by 20th Century Fox. In 1998, he worked with Dev Benegal again in the controversial film Split Wide Open.
Disputed in India because of the nature of the content in the film, Bose went on to win the Silver Screen Award for Best Asian Actor at the 2000 Singapore International Film Festival for his stellar performance in the movie.
In 2002, Rahul starred in the critically acclaimed romantic drama Mr. and Mrs. Iyer opposite Konkona Sen Sharma. Directed by Aparna Sen, the film premiered at the Locarno International Film Festival. It won several national and international awards including three National Awards.
After that, he appeared in Sujoy Ghosh`s directorial debut Jhankaar Beats. The film was a commercial failure. The same year he was seen in the critically acclaimed Chameli. Boss teamed up with the director Aparna Sen for the second time in 15 Park Avenue (2005).
The film received the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in English. His next Pyaar Ke Side Effects (2006) was a sleeper hit. The film grabbed headlines for the subtle portrayal of the commitment phobia of modern relationships.
Some of his other notable films are Anuranan (2006), Shaurya (2008), The Japanese Wife (2010), and I Am (2011).
In 2013, he made his Tamil debut with the bilingual Vishwaroopam helmed by Kamal Haasan. He played the role of terrorist Omar Qureshi. The film opened to rave reviews and became one of the top-grossing movies of the year. Boss`s role was lauded by all.
He also played a pivotal role in Zoya Akhtar`s multi-starrer Dil Dhadakne Do. He directed and co-produced Poorna: Courage Has No Limit (2017), which was based on the life of Malavath Purna, the youngest girl in the world to have reached the summit of Mount Everest.
His 2018 projects include a spy thriller film titled Vishwaroopam II in Tamil and Vishwaroop II in Hindi. His 2020 release includes Bulbbul.
