Biography
Rahul Sadasivan is an Indian filmmaker and screenwriter known for his distinctive work in Malayalam horror and folk-horror cinema. His films are recognized for their atmospheric storytelling, psychological themes, and unconventional visual style.
Early Life and Education
Rahul Sadasivan was born on 7 December 1986 in Palakkad, Kerala. He completed his schooling at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Kanjikode, before pursuing formal training in filmmaking at the London Film Academy. He later completed a master's degree in Animation and VFX from the University of South Wales.
Career
Sadasivan made his directorial debut with Red Rain (2013), a science-fiction film inspired by the mysterious red rain phenomenon reported in Kerala. Although it was a low-budget production and did not achieve major mainstream success, it established his interest in genre filmmaking.
After a long gap, he returned with Bhoothakaalam (2022), a psychological horror film starring Shane Nigam and Revathi. The film was released directly through streaming and received considerable critical praise for its atmosphere, sound design, and performances. Revathi won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress for her performance.
His breakthrough on a larger scale came with Bramayugam (2024), a period folk-horror film starring Mammootty, Arjun Ashokan and Sidharth Bharathan. Set in 17th-century Kerala, the film uses folklore, mythology and themes of power and oppression. Sadasivan chose to present the film entirely in black and white, giving it a distinctive visual identity.
Bramayugam
Bramayugam became one of Sadasivan's most prominent works. The story follows Thevan, a folk singer who escapes slavery and finds himself in a mysterious mansion inhabited by a cook and the formidable Kodumon Potti, played by Mammootty. The film combines folk horror with allegory and psychological tension.
The film was well received by critics and audiences and became a commercial success, further establishing Sadasivan as an important contemporary voice in Indian genre cinema.
Later Work
Sadasivan subsequently directed Diés Iraé (2025), continuing his association with horror and psychological storytelling. The film stars Pranav Mohanlal and further demonstrates his interest in atmospheric and unconventional genre narratives.
Filmmaking Style
Rahul Sadasivan is particularly known for creating slow-burning, atmospheric horror rather than relying solely on conventional jump scares. His films often explore fear through isolation, folklore, psychological uncertainty, and power dynamics.
