Rajesh M. Selva is an Indian film director and screenwriter, primarily associated with Tamil cinema. Born on March 21, 1981, in Tamil Nadu, India, he has made significant contributions to the industry through his diverse talents and collaborations.
Early Life and Education
Rajesh's journey in the entertainment sector began during his school days at M. C. C. Higher Secondary School, where he co-founded the band Shenanigans in 1999 with his classmates Naresh and Sathish Ramalingam. Pursuing his passion for visual arts, he earned a degree in Visual Communications from St. Thomas College in 2003 and later completed his master's degree from Loyola College, Chennai, in 2005. During this period, he also undertook a visual design course under the mentorship of Mr. Jullius Mac Van.
Music Career
In 2005, Rajesh established DesignSelva, a record company that facilitated his musical endeavors. Along with his band, he released an independent album titled "She 16" in collaboration with Saregama HMV in October 2006. This venture showcased his versatility and commitment to exploring various creative avenues.
Film Career
Transitioning to the film industry, Rajesh made his directorial debut with "Kaalaippani" in 2008, a murder mystery that received positive reviews for its clarity in execution. A critic noted that Rajesh Selva has "very well applied his paper on the screen," adding his "clarity in execution is evident throughout the film."
In 2008, he joined Raaj Kamal Films International, working closely with veteran actor Kamal Haasan. He contributed to projects like "Vishwaroopam" (2013) and "Uttama Villain" (2015), gaining valuable experience and insights. His collaboration with Kamal Haasan culminated in directing "Thoongaa Vanam" (2015), a Tamil-Telugu bilingual action thriller that was completed in a remarkable sixty-day shoot. The film, featuring an ensemble cast led by Kamal Haasan, received critical acclaim and performed well at the box office.
In 2019, Rajesh directed "Kadaram Kondan," further establishing his reputation as a skilled filmmaker. He expanded into the digital space with the 2022 Tamil-language crime thriller web series "Irai," starring R. Sarathkumar. As of 2023, he is directing a Tamil-Telugu bilingual project featuring Aditi Rao Hydari and Anson Paul.
