Rajinder Krishan

Biography

Rajinder Krishan was one of the most celebrated lyricists, poets, and screenwriters in Indian cinema. Born on 6 June 1919 in Jalalpur Jattan, Punjab (now in Pakistan), he showed an early interest in literature and poetry. Before entering films, he worked as a clerk while continuing to write poetry and participate in literary activities. After moving to Bombay in the 1940s, he began his journey in the Hindi film industry.

 

 

Rajinder Krishan gained recognition for his poetic lyrics and strong storytelling abilities. His first major success came with Aaj Ki Raat (1948), and he soon became one of Bollywood’s leading lyricists and dialogue writers. Over a career spanning four decades, he wrote more than a thousand songs and collaborated with renowned music directors such as C. Ramchandra, Madan Mohan, Ravi, S. D. Burman, and R. D. Burman.

 

 

His songs were admired for their simplicity, emotional depth, and memorable melodies. Rajinder Krishan also excelled as a dialogue and screenplay writer, contributing significantly to many successful films. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Lyricist for the song “Tumhi Mere Mandir” from Khandan (1965).
