Biography

Raj Mehra (20 May 1913 – 10 April 1993) was an Indian actor and one of the most respected character artists in Hindi cinema. Over a career spanning more than four decades, he appeared in over 300 Hindi films and became widely recognized for portraying fathers, judges, police officers, doctors, lawyers, and other dignified authority figures. His natural performances and commanding screen presence made him a familiar face in Bollywood from the late 1940s through the early 1990s.

Early Life

Raj Mehra was born on 20 May 1913 in British India. Although little is publicly documented about his early life and education, he developed an interest in acting at a young age and eventually entered the Hindi film industry, where he built a long and successful career as a character actor.

Career

Raj Mehra began his film career with Shaheed Latif's Shikayat (1948). In the years that followed, he established himself as one of Hindi cinema's most dependable supporting actors.

He became especially known for portraying the father of leading actors, bringing warmth, dignity, and emotional depth to his roles. His ability to convincingly play respected family patriarchs and authoritative figures made him a favorite among filmmakers. Throughout his career, he worked with several generations of Bollywood stars, including Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Shammi Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar, Dharmendra, Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Jeetendra, and Rishi Kapoor.

Among his most memorable performances were his role as Raj Kapoor's father in Sharada (1957) and the Police Superintendent in Jis Desh Men Ganga Behti Hai (1960). These roles remain some of the finest examples of his talent as a character actor.

Raj Mehra continued acting well into the early 1990s. His final screen appearance was in Aasoo Bane Angaarey (1993), released shortly before his death.
