Biography

Ram Avtar (born 1911) was an Indian character actor and comedian who worked in Hindi cinema from the late 1930s to the early 1980s. Best known for his distinctive comic presence, large physique, and cheerful personality, he became a familiar face in numerous Bollywood films, particularly those directed by Nasir Hussain.

Early Life

Ram Avtar was born in 1911 in Rawalpindi, then part of British India (now in Pakistan). He entered the film industry during the late 1930s, initially appearing in character roles before gradually establishing himself as a comedian.

Career

Ram Avtar began his acting career portraying supporting and character roles in Hindi films. During the 1950s, he transitioned into comedy, becoming popular for his jovial expressions, comic timing, and memorable screen presence.

He was a regular collaborator with filmmaker Nasir Hussain, appearing in several of his successful films. His notable performances include Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957), Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai (1961), Teesri Manzil (1966), and Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973). In these films, he portrayed a variety of comic and supporting characters, ranging from the hero's companion to humorous incidental roles.

Throughout his long career, Ram Avtar appeared alongside many of Hindi cinema's biggest stars, including Shammi Kapoor, Dev Anand, Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, and Amitabh Bachchan. His unmistakable appearance and lighthearted performances made him a popular supporting actor in classic Hindi cinema.
