Ram Mukherjee

Biography

Ram Mukherjee (22 October 1933 – 22 October 2017) was an Indian film director, producer, and screenwriter who worked primarily in Hindi cinema. A member of the renowned Mukherjee-Samarth film family, he played an important role in Bollywood during the 1960s and 1970s and was instrumental in launching and supporting several successful film careers.

Early Life

Ram Mukherjee was born in Kolkata (then Calcutta), West Bengal, India. He belonged to the illustrious Mukherjee-Samarth family, which has produced several prominent actors, directors, and producers in Indian cinema.

Career

Ram Mukherjee began his career as a filmmaker and directed and produced several Hindi films. He is best remembered for directing:

He was known for making family dramas and socially relevant films featuring some of the biggest stars of the era, including Sunil Dutt, Dilip Kumar, Hema Malini, and Shashi Kapoor.

Apart from filmmaking, Ram Mukherjee was actively involved in the administration of the Indian film industry and served as a respected member of several film organizations.

Family

Ram Mukherjee was the father of actress and director Rani Mukerji and film producer Raja Mukherjee. He was the elder brother of producer Shomu Mukherjee, making actresses Kajol and Tanishaa Mukerji his nieces. He was also related to actress Debashree Roy through the extended Mukherjee family.

Death

Ram Mukherjee passed away on 22 October 2017, his 84th birthday, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.
