Biography
One of the most celebrated filmmakers in contemporary Malayalam cinema, Ranjith Balakrishnan, known mononymously as Ranjith, is a screenwriter, director, producer, and actor. In a career spanning over three decades, he has penned some of the landmark films in Malayalam cinema, including award-winning indie movies and mainstream blockbusters.
Some of Ranjith`s best-known writing credits include the Mohanlal starrer Devasuram (1993), Aaraam Thampuran (1997), Summer in Bethlehem (1998), and Narasimham (2000). Since his directorial debut with the action drama Ravanaprabhu (2001), Ranjith has helmed hits like Nandanam (2002), Thirakkatha (2008), Pranchiyettan and The Saint (2010), Indian Rupee (2011) and Spirit (2012). Of these, Thirakkatha and Indian Rupee won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam.
More recently, Ranjith directed the Mammootty starrer Puthan Panam (2017) and the Mohanlal starrer Drama (2018), besides appearing in movies like Koode (2018), Unda (2019) and King Fish (2019). His 2020 release includes Ayyappanum Koshiyum.
