Renji Panicker

Biography

Renji Panicker is an Indian screenwriter, director, actor, producer, journalist and lyricist known primarily for his influential work in Malayalam cinema. Born on 23 September 1960 in Nedumudi, Kerala, he began his professional career as a journalist before entering the film industry.

Early Life and Journalism

Panicker studied commerce at Sanatana Dharma College in Alappuzha and later pursued journalism, earning a master's degree from the University of Kerala. He began his career as a journalist and worked with magazines and publications, including the film magazine Chithrabhumi. His association with cinema deepened after he met director Shaji Kailas while working as a journalist.

Screenwriting Career

Renji Panicker emerged as one of the prominent screenwriters of Malayalam cinema during the 1990s. His early screenplay work included Dr. Pasupathy (1990), followed by successful collaborations with Shaji Kailas on films such as Thalastaanam (1992), Sthalathe Pradhana Payyans (1993), Ekalavyan (1993), Mafia (1993), Commissioner (1994) and The King (1995).

His writing became particularly known for powerful dialogue, political themes, action-oriented narratives and larger-than-life protagonists. His collaboration with Shaji Kailas played an important role in establishing Suresh Gopi as a major leading star during the 1990s.

Panicker also collaborated with director Joshiy on films including Lelam (1997) and Pathram (1999), further establishing his reputation as a writer of commercially successful Malayalam thrillers and action dramas.

Directorial Career

Panicker made his directorial debut with Bharatchandran IPS in 2005. The film continued the story of the police officer Bharatchandran, a character originally introduced in Commissioner. He later directed Roudram (2008), another police-oriented action film.

Acting Career

Although primarily recognized as a writer and director, Panicker gradually became active as an actor. He appeared in films including Ohm Shanthi Oshaana (2014), Njaan (2014), Premam (2015), Picket 43 (2015), Jacobinte Swargarajyam (2016), Thoppil Joppan (2016), Godha (2017) and Bhayanakam (2018).

His performance in Bhayanakam received particular recognition, and he won the Best Actor award at the Madrid Imagineindia International Film Festival for the film.

Renji Panicker has worked across several areas of filmmaking, including screenwriting, directing, acting, and production. His writing from the 1990s, especially his collaborations with Shaji Kailas and Joshiy, became an important part of Malayalam commercial cinema.

Personal Life

Renji Panicker was married to Aneeta Marium Thomas, whom he knew from his university days. They had twin sons. Aneeta died in March 2019 after an illness.
