Richard Burton was a Welsh actor renowned for his powerful voice, commanding stage presence, and performances in both Shakespearean theatre and major films.
He was born Richard Walter Jenkins Jr. on November 10, 1925, in Pontrhydyfen, Wales. He began his career on the stage and became one of Britain's leading actors before achieving international fame in Hollywood.
His notable films include My Cousin Rachel (1952), The Robe (1953), Alexander the Great (1956), The Longest Day (1962), Becket (1964), The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965), Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966), and Where Eagles Dare (1968). He also starred as the drunken Welsh poet in Candy (1968) alongside Ewa Aulin and Marlon Brando.
Burton received seven Academy Award nominations for acting but never won. He was also highly acclaimed for his Shakespearean performances, particularly as Hamlet.
His personal life attracted considerable public attention, especially his two marriages to Elizabeth Taylor. Their relationship became one of the most famous romances in Hollywood history.
Richard Burton died on August 5, 1984, in Céligny, Switzerland, at the age of 58. He remains regarded as one of the greatest Welsh actors of the 20th century.
