Richard Erdman

Biography

 

Richard Erdman was an American character actor and occasional director whose career in film and television spanned more than seven decades. He was born John Richard Erdmann on June 1, 1925, in Enid, Oklahoma.

 

Erdman began his film career in the 1940s and appeared in more than 160 film and television productions. His notable films include The Men (1950), in which he played paraplegic veteran Leo alongside Marlon Brando, Cry Danger (1951), Stalag 17 (1953), and Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970).

 

He also had an extensive television career, appearing in series such as Perry Mason, The Twilight Zone, The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Beverly Hillbillies, Cheers, and Murder, She Wrote. In his later years, he gained a new generation of fans as Leonard Briggs on Community (2009–2015).

 

Richard Erdman died on March 16, 2019, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 93.
