Biography

Robert Duvall is an acclaimed American actor and filmmaker whose career has spanned more than six decades. Known for his powerful and understated performances, he has portrayed memorable characters in films such as To Kill a Mockingbird, The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, Tender Mercies, and The Judge.

Early Life

Robert Selden Duvall was born on January 5, 1931, in San Diego, California. His father, William Howard Duvall, was a United States Navy admiral, and his mother, Mildred Virginia Hart, was an amateur actress.

Duvall developed an interest in acting while serving in the United States Army. After completing his military service, he studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York City under Sanford Meisner.

Early Career

Duvall began his professional career on stage and appeared in numerous television productions during the 1950s and early 1960s. His first major film role came in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), where he played Arthur "Boo" Radley. Although the character had little dialogue, Duvall's performance became one of the film's most memorable elements.

The Godfather

Duvall's breakthrough came with The Godfather (1972), directed by Francis Ford Coppola. He portrayed Tom Hagen, the adopted son and trusted consigliere of Vito Corleone, played by Marlon Brando.
