Robert Leacock

Biography

Robert Leacock, born on May 29, 1949, in the USA, has carved a distinguished career primarily as a cinematographer and director in the world of film and television. While not always in the spotlight, his work has contributed significantly to notable projects across various genres.   

Leacock comes from a filmmaking family; he is the son of Richard Leacock, a pioneer of cinéma vérité, and the nephew of director Philip Leacock. His early exposure to the industry undoubtedly shaped his path. His first foray into professional filmmaking was as a sound man on the iconic 1968 music festival documentary Monterey Pop, a project on which his father and Albert Maysles served as cinematographers.   

This initial experience led Leacock to pursue a career behind the camera. He has since accumulated an impressive list of credits as a cinematographer on diverse projects. These include the groundbreaking documentary Madonna: Truth or Dare (1991), Al Pacino's insightful exploration of Shakespeare in Looking for Richard (1996), and the fashion world documentary Unzipped (1995). His keen eye and ability to capture the essence of a scene have made him a sought-after talent in both documentary and feature film realms.

Beyond cinematography, Leacock has also stepped into the role of director. His directorial work includes the documentary Catwalk (1995), which followed supermodel Christy Turlington during Fashion Week, and episodes of the long-running sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live. He also directed the TV movie Choices in 1992.
