Biography

Robert Paynter (12 March 1928 – 20 October 2010) was an English cinematographer and camera operator known for his work in British and Hollywood films. Born in South London, England, he entered the film industry as a camera trainee and later became one of the respected directors of photography of his generation.

Paynter worked on several major films and was especially known for his collaborations with directors such as John Landis and Michael Winner. His cinematography was praised for its creative use of color, lighting, and visual style.

He gained international recognition as the cinematographer of Superman II and Superman III, directed by Richard Lester. For Superman II, Paynter helped create a bright, comic-book-inspired visual style that matched the film's adventurous tone.

His other notable cinematography credits include An American Werewolf in London, Trading Places, The Muppets Take Manhattan, Spies Like Us, and Little Shop of Horrors. He also served as director of photography for Thriller, one of the most influential music videos ever made.
