Robert Ryman

Biography

Robert Ryman (1930–2019) was an American painter known for his minimalist, abstract works, especially his distinctive white paintings. Born on May 30, 1930, in Nashville, Tennessee, he moved to New York in 1952 intending to pursue jazz music.

Ryman worked as a security guard at the Museum of Modern Art for seven years, where he closely studied modern paintings and developed an interest in art. He began painting in the mid-1950s and eventually devoted himself to art full-time.

He became famous for paintings using white or off-white paint, often on square surfaces. Rather than focusing on images or stories, Ryman explored the physical qualities of paint, texture, light, surface and the way paintings were attached to walls.

Ryman had his first solo exhibition in 1967 and later exhibited internationally at major museums and galleries. Although often associated with Minimalism and Conceptual Art, he resisted being placed within a specific movement.

Robert Ryman died on February 8, 2019, in New York City, aged 88. He remains an influential figure in postwar American art, remembered for demonstrating how simple materials and limited colors could create remarkably varied artistic experiences.
