Biography

Romare Bearden (1911–1988) was an American artist renowned for his vibrant collages, paintings, and illustrations that explored African American culture, history, and identity. Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, Bearden moved with his family to Harlem, New York, during the Great Migration, where he was immersed in the rich cultural and artistic environment of the Harlem Renaissance. This early exposure shaped his lifelong commitment to depicting the experiences and stories of Black Americans.

Bearden studied art at Boston University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the Art Students League in New York, and he also worked as a writer, musician, and educator. His artistic career was diverse, encompassing painting, printmaking, and most famously, collage. He developed a distinctive style that combined fragmented images, photographs, magazine clippings, and painted elements to create dynamic, layered compositions.
