Biography
Komal Mahuvakar, popularly known by her screen name Rupini (born November 4, 1969), is a former Indian actress who worked across Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam cinema during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Born in Mumbai to a well-educated family, she was trained in classical dance from the age of four under Lachhu Maharaj and mastered Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Odissi, and Kathak. She was first noticed by filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee, who cast her in child roles in films such as Mili, Kotwal Saab, and Khubsoorat under her birth name.
She later transitioned into lead roles in Hindi films like Payal Ki Jhankaar, Ghungroo, Meri Adalat, and Awara Baap. After entering South Indian cinema, she adopted the name Rupini and became widely known for films such as Cooliekkaran, Manithan, Apoorva Sagodharargal, Michael Madana Kama Rajan, and Madurai Veeran Enga Saami.
Following her marriage in 1995, Rupini stepped away from acting to focus on family life and later founded the Universal Heart Hospital in Chembur. She returned to the screen in 2020 with the Tamil television serial Chithi 2, marking her comeback after many years.
