Salu K. Thomas

Biography

Salu K. Thomas is an Indian cinematographer known for his work in Malayalam cinema. He is particularly recognized for his visually detailed and naturalistic approach to cinematography. He is a graduate of the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), where he specialized in cinematography. Before pursuing formal film education, he studied mechanical engineering at Mar Athanasius College of Engineering in Kerala.

Career

Salu K. Thomas began his professional career by working as an assistant director on commercials and feature films. After completing his studies at SRFTI, he moved into cinematography and worked on short films, documentaries, and feature films.

He gained major recognition as the cinematographer of The Great Indian Kitchen (2021), directed by Jeo Baby. His camera work played an important role in contrasting the film's domestic environment with the protagonist's growing sense of frustration and confinement.

Salu subsequently collaborated with Jeo Baby on Freedom Fight (2022), contributing cinematography to the segment Asanghadithar. He also worked on Sree Dhanya Catering Service (2022), 4 Years (2022), and Tarla (2023).

Kaathal – The Core

One of his notable collaborations with Jeo Baby was Kaathal – The Core (2023), starring Mammootty and Jyothika. Salu K. Thomas returned as cinematographer, continuing his collaboration with the director and contributing to the film's restrained visual style.

Later Work

His later cinematography credits include Parakramam (2024) and Daveed (2025). In Daveed, directed by Govind Vishnu, his cinematography helped shape the film's action-oriented visual presentation.

He has also worked on short films and documentary projects. His cinematography for the short film Suranga, produced during his SRFTI period, was part of a film that received the Best Film award at the Kalpanirjhar Film Festival in 2021.
