Biography
Saul Chaplin was an American composer, musical director, arranger, and producer who played an important role in Hollywood's Golden Age of musicals.
He was born Saul Kaplan on February 19, 1912, in Brooklyn, New York. He began his career as a pianist and songwriter before moving into film and becoming a prominent musical director and arranger.
Chaplin worked on many celebrated Hollywood musicals, including The Band Wagon (1953), Kiss Me Kate (1953), Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954), The Benny Goodman Story (1956), West Side Story (1961), Mary Poppins (1964), and My Fair Lady (1964).
He won three Academy Awards for his contributions to film music, including awards for The Big Country (1958), Porgy and Bess (1959), and West Side Story (1961). He also received several other Oscar nominations during his career.
Chaplin later became a music executive and producer at major studios, where he helped oversee the musical aspects of numerous productions. He was respected for his ability to translate successful stage and popular music into effective film scores and arrangements.
Saul Chaplin died on November 15, 1997, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 85.
