Scatman Crothers (May 23, 1910 – November 22, 1986) was an American actor, musician, and voice artist whose career spanned more than five decades. Known for his warm screen presence and distinctive voice, Crothers built a reputation in film, television, and music. He is especially remembered for his role as Dick Hallorann in The Shining (1980) and for his contributions to jazz and animated television.

 

 

Early Life

Born Benjamin Sherman Crothers in Terre Haute, Indiana, he developed an interest in music at an early age. Largely self-taught, Crothers learned to play drums and guitar and soon began performing as a singer and entertainer. His nickname “Scatman” came from his skill in scat singing, a jazz vocal style involving improvised syllables and rhythms.

 

In the 1930s and 1940s, Crothers toured extensively as a musician, building a reputation as a lively performer in clubs and on radio programs. His musical background laid the foundation for his later work in film and television.

 

 

Transition to Acting

Crothers was also highly active in television. He appeared in numerous series and became especially popular for his voice work in animated programs.
