Biography
Sebastião Salgado was a celebrated Brazilian photographer and photojournalist, widely regarded as one of the greatest documentary photographers of the modern era. He was born on February 8, 1944, in Aimorés, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Before pursuing photography, Salgado studied economics and earned a master's degree, later working as an economist. During his international travels, he discovered his passion for photography and decided to dedicate his life to documenting humanity and the natural world.
Salgado began his professional photography career in the early 1970s and quickly gained recognition for his powerful black-and-white images that captured the lives of workers, migrants, refugees, and indigenous communities. His work took him to more than 120 countries, where he documented social issues, armed conflicts, environmental challenges, and cultural traditions with remarkable depth and compassion.
Among his most influential projects are Workers, which celebrates manual labor across the world; Migrations, documenting displaced populations and global migration; and Genesis, a monumental project showcasing untouched landscapes, wildlife, and traditional communities. His photographs are known for their dramatic composition, rich tonal quality, and emotional storytelling, making them iconic works of documentary photography.
In addition to his photographic achievements, Salgado and his wife, Lélia Wanick Salgado, founded the Instituto Terra, a nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to restoring Brazil's Atlantic Forest. Their successful reforestation efforts transformed degraded land into a thriving ecosystem and became an international model for environmental conservation.
Throughout his career, Sebastião Salgado received numerous prestigious international awards for both photography and humanitarian contributions. His work has been exhibited in major museums and galleries worldwide and published in several bestselling books.
