Biography
Shahadi Wright Joseph is an American actress, singer, and dancer, born on April 29, 2005, in Brooklyn, New York City. She began dancing at the age of two and developed an early interest in performing. Her professional career started in theater, and at the age of nine, she made her Broadway debut as Young Nala in The Lion King.
She later became an original cast member of Andrew Lloyd Webber's School of Rock – The Musical, playing Madison and understudying the role of Tomika. In 2016, she appeared as Little Inez in the NBC musical television special Hairspray Live!.
Joseph made her feature-film breakthrough in Jordan Peele's horror film Us (2019), portraying both Zora Wilson and her sinister doppelgänger, Umbrae. Her performance received several award nominations, including recognition from the Critics' Choice Awards, Saturn Awards, and Black Reel Awards.
In the same year, she voiced Young Nala in Disney's The Lion King (2019), returning to the character she had previously played on Broadway.
Joseph later starred as Ruby Lee Emory in the Amazon Prime Video horror anthology series Them (2021–2024). Her other credits include Six Minutes, Come Find Me, M.U.B., and Cookbook for Southern Housewives.
