Shaheed Latif
Biography
Shaheed Latif (11 June 1913 – 16 April 1967) was an Indian film director, producer, and screenwriter who made significant contributions to Hindi cinema during the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. He was known for his sensitive storytelling, social themes, and association with some of the finest talents of Indian cinema.
Early Life
Shaheed Latif was born on 11 June 1913 in Chandigarh, Punjab, British India. He studied at Aligarh Muslim University before entering the film industry. He began his career at Bombay Talkies, where he worked with renowned filmmakers and developed his skills in filmmaking.
Career
Shaheed Latif made his directorial debut with Ziddi (1948), which became a major success and helped establish Dev Anand as a leading star. He went on to direct several acclaimed films, including Arzoo (1950), Sone Ki Chidiya (1958), Bahar (1951), and Mast Qalandar (1955).
He also produced and wrote films, including the classic Garam Coat (1955). His films were known for strong characters, emotional depth, and meaningful themes.
Shaheed Latif was married to writer and filmmaker Ismat Chughtai, and together they contributed greatly to Indian cinema and literature.
Legacy
Shaheed Latif remains remembered as an important filmmaker of the golden era of Hindi cinema. His work reflected human emotions, social issues, and artistic storytelling, leaving a lasting influence on Indian films.
He passed away on 16 April 1967 at the age of 53.
