Biography
Shaji N. Karun is an acclaimed Indian cinematographer and filmmaker who predominantly worked in Malayalam cinema. Born on 1 January 1952 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, he became one of the most respected cinematographers of Indian parallel cinema.
He began his career as a cinematographer and worked on several notable Malayalam films, including Thampu, Kummatty, Elippathayam, Koodevide? and Mukhamukham. His collaborations with filmmakers such as G. Aravindan and Adoor Gopalakrishnan helped establish his reputation for visually rich and atmospheric cinematography.
Shaji N. Karun made his directorial debut with Piravi (1989), a deeply emotional film that received international acclaim. The film won the Caméra d'Or – Mention d'honneur at the Cannes Film Festival and several major Indian awards.
He subsequently directed films such as Swaham (1994), Vanaprastham (1999), Nishad (2002), Kutty Srank (2009) and Swapaanam (2014). His films are known for their visual beauty, restrained storytelling and exploration of human emotions.
Over his career, Shaji N. Karun has received several national and international honours, including the National Film Award, Kerala State Film Awards and the Padma Shri. He remains an influential figure in Indian cinematography and art-house filmmaking.
