Biography

Shanmugasundaram (born 3 August 1939 in Sirkazhi near Chennai) was a distinguished Indian actor whose career in Tamil cinema and television spanned more than five decades. He entered the film industry in the early 1960s and went on to become one of the most respected character actors in South Indian entertainment.

 

 

Early Life and Entry into Acting

Shanmugasundaram was born into a family of businesspeople in Chennai. His journey into acting began unexpectedly during his college days when he stepped in for another artist in a drama performance and earned praise for his natural talent. This experience led him to work in Tamil theatre before transitioning to films.

 

 

Film Career

He made his film debut with Ratha Thilagam (1963), directed by and starring Sivaji Ganesan, which opened the door to a long and prolific career. Over the years, Shanmugasundaram appeared in hundreds of films, portraying a wide range of characters—from mythological figures to village elders and comedic roles. One of his most memorable performances was in the popular 1989 movie Karagattakaran, where he played a poignant role that became widely appreciated. He also featured in films like Kizhakku Vaasal, Chennai 600028, and Goa.

 

 

Television and Later Work

Beyond cinema, Shanmugasundaram became a familiar face on television. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, he appeared in several successful serials, notably Annamalai, Selvi, and Arasi. His transition to television further broadened his appeal among audiences across generations.

 

 

Legacy and Death

Shanmugasundaram was admired for his versatility and warmly remembered for his ability to bring depth to every role he played. On 15 August 2017, he passed away at the age of 78 due to age-related ailments, leaving behind a rich legacy in Tamil cinema and television.
