S. Hareesh
Biography
S. Hareesh is an Indian writer, screenwriter, and translator known for his influential work in Malayalam literature and cinema. Born on 15 May 1975 in Neendoor, Kottayam, Kerala, he began his literary career with short stories and later became one of the prominent contemporary voices in Malayalam writing.
His first story collection, Rasavidhyayude Charithram, earned him the Kerala Sahitya Akademi's Geetha Hiranyan Endowment. His acclaimed novel Meesha won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Novel, while its English translation, Moustache, won the 2020 JCB Prize for Literature.
Hareesh has also made a significant contribution to Malayalam cinema as a screenwriter. He wrote the screenplay and dialogues for Aedan (2018) and collaborated with filmmaker Lijo Jose Pellissery on Jallikattu (2019), Churuli (2021) and Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam (2023). His screenplay for Jallikattu, based on his short story Maoist, received the Kerala State Film Award for Best Screenplay.
His literary works include the short-story collections Rasavidhyayude Charithram, Aadam and Appan, as well as the novels Meesa, August 17 and Pattunool Puzhu. Through both literature and cinema, Hareesh is known for exploring social realities, human behaviour, caste and rural life with distinctive and unconventional storytelling.
