Biography

Shyam, born Samuel Joseph in 1937, is a noted Indian music composer who made a significant mark in Malayalam cinema. Renowned for his versatility and musical depth, he was one of the most prolific composers in the industry from the mid-1970s to the late 1980s.

 

 

Early Life & Training

Shyam received strong musical training in both Western and Indian classical traditions. He learned Western violin and was also trained in Carnatic classical violin under the legendary Lalgudi Jayaraman.

 

 

Career Beginnings

Before becoming an independent composer, Shyam worked extensively as an assistant and collaborator with some of the greatest music directors in Indian cinema, including:

M. S. Viswanathan (who gave him the name “Shyam”)

Salil Chowdhury

Rajan-Nagendra

S. Rajeswara Rao

He also worked as a lead violinist with renowned composers such as:

Naushad

Madan Mohan

R. D. Burman

G. Devarajan

Rise in Malayalam Cinema

Debut

Shyam made his debut as an independent composer with the film:

Manyasree Viswamithran, directed by Madhu

The film’s soundtrack, including the popular song Kettille Kottayathoru, was a major success and established him as a promising composer.

From the mid-1970s to the late 1980s, Shyam had an exceptionally prolific career, composing music for nearly 200 films in Malayalam cinema.
