Sibi Malayil

Biography

Sibi Malayil is an acclaimed Indian film director who works primarily in Malayalam cinema. Born on 2 May 1956 in Alappuzha, Kerala, he began his career as an assistant director to filmmakers such as Priyadarshan and Fazil before becoming an independent director.

He made his directorial debut with Mutharamkunnu P.O. (1985) and established himself with films such as Thaniyavarthanam (1987), Vicharana (1988), Kireedam (1989), Dasharatham (1989), His Highness Abdullah (1990), Bharatham (1991), Sadayam (1992), Kamaladalam (1992), Akashadoothu (1993), Chenkol (1993) and Sagaram Sakshi (1994).

One of his most celebrated films is Thaniyavarthanam (1987), written by A. K. Lohithadas and starring Mammootty. The psychological drama explores superstition, social attitudes toward mental illness and the destructive power of family beliefs. The film became a cult classic.

Sibi Malayil also collaborated extensively with Mohanlal, directing him in films including Kireedam, Dasharatham, His Highness Abdullah, Bharatham, Kamaladalam and Chenkol. Bharatham earned Mohanlal the National Film Award for Best Actor.

His later notable works include Summer in Bethlehem (1998), Devadoothan (2000), Ishtam (2001), Ente Veedu Appuvinteyum (2003), Apoorva Ragam (2010), Saigal Padukayanu (2015) and Koththu (2022). For Ente Veedu Appuvinteyum, he received the Kerala State Film Award for Best Director.

With a career spanning several decades, Sibi Malayil is regarded as one of the important filmmakers of Malayalam cinema, particularly for his emotionally rich family dramas and psychologically driven stories.
