Biography

Simon Baker (born July 30, 1969, in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia) is an Australian actor, director, and producer. He is widely recognised for his performances in television dramas and feature films, particularly for playing Patrick Jane in the popular crime drama The Mentalist (2008–2015) and Nicholas Fallin in The Guardian (2001–2004). He developed an interest in acting after spending his teenage years participating in competitive surfing and water polo.

Baker began his acting career in Australian television during the early 1990s. He gained recognition for his role as Constable Sam Farrell in the soap opera E Street (1992–1993), which earned him a Logie Award for Most Popular New Talent in 1992. He subsequently appeared in television programmes such as A Country Practice, Home and Away, and Heartbreak High, gradually establishing himself as a promising Australian television actor.

In 1997, Baker moved into Hollywood productions and gained international attention for his supporting role as Matt Reynolds in the critically acclaimed crime film L.A. Confidential. He continued appearing in films such as Most Wanted (1997), Restaurant (1998), Judas Kiss (1998), and Ride with the Devil (1999), directed by Ang Lee. His other early film appearances included Sunset Strip (2000), Red Planet (2000), and The Affair of the Necklace (2001).

His television career reached another important milestone when he starred as Nick Fallin, a corporate lawyer who becomes a child advocate, in the CBS drama The Guardian (2001–2004). His performance earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Television Drama Series in 2002. He later appeared in the television series Smith (2006) before securing one of his most recognised roles as Patrick Jane in The Mentalist (2008–2015). His portrayal of the highly observant crime consultant earned him Golden Globe, Primetime Emmy, and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations.

Alongside his television work, Baker continued building his film career with appearances in The Ring Two (2005), Land of the Dead (2005), Something New (2006), and The Devil Wears Prada (2006), in which he played Christian Thompson opposite Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway. Other notable film credits include The Killer Inside Me (2010), Margin Call (2011), I Give It a Year (2013), and Here and Now (2018).

Baker also expanded his career into directing and producing. He directed episodes of The Guardian and The Mentalist before making his feature-film directorial debut with Breath (2017), an adaptation of Tim Winton's novel. He directed, co-wrote, produced, and starred in the film as Sando, alongside Elizabeth Debicki and Richard Roxburgh. The film received several Australian film award nominations and won recognition for its direction and screenplay.

His later acting projects include High Ground (2020), Roar (2022), Blaze (2022), Limbo (2023), Boy Swallows Universe (2024), and The Narrow Road to the Deep North (2025). He also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2013 in recognition of his contributions to television.
