S.L. Puram Sadanandan
Biography
S. L. Puram Sadanandan (15 April 1928 – 17 September 2005) was an Indian playwright and screenwriter from Kerala who made a significant contribution to Malayalam theatre and cinema.
He achieved a major milestone in 1967 when he won the National Film Award for Best Screenplay for Agniputhri. He was the first recipient of the award, establishing an important place for himself in the history of Indian cinema.
Sadanandan was also an accomplished playwright whose work was closely associated with Malayalam theatre. His writing combined dramatic storytelling with themes rooted in social and family life, and his contributions helped strengthen the connection between Malayalam theatre and cinema.
He was married to Omana Sadanandan and had two sons, Jayasurya and Jayasoma. His son Jayasurya later became a filmmaker and directed movies including Speed Track, Angel John and Jack & Daniel.
S. L. Puram Sadanandan died on 17 September 2005. He is remembered particularly for his pioneering achievement as the inaugural recipient of the National Film Award for Best Screenplay.
