Biography
Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, born on June 9, 1985, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, is a prominent Indian actress and fashion icon known for her work in Hindi cinema. She is the daughter of veteran actor Anil Kapoor and the granddaughter of filmmaker Surinder Kapoor, making her part of the illustrious Kapoor film family.
Early Life and Education
Sonam pursued her education at the United World College of South East Asia in Singapore, where she studied theatre and history. She later attended the University of Mumbai and the University of East London, focusing on economics and political science. Before entering the film industry, she worked as an assistant director on Sanjay Leela Bhansali's acclaimed film Black (2005).
Film Career
Sonam made her acting debut with Bhansali's Saawariya in 2007. Although the film did not perform well commercially, it marked her entry into Bollywood. She gained recognition with films like I Hate Luv Storys (2010) and Aisha (2010). Her performance in Raanjhanaa (2013) was a turning point, earning her critical acclaim and award nominations.
In 2016, Sonam portrayed Neerja Bhanot in the biographical thriller Neerja, which earned her a National Film Award – Special Mention and a Filmfare Award for Best Actress (Critics). She continued to take on diverse roles in films like Pad Man (2018), Veere Di Wedding (2018), and Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga (2019), the latter being notable for its representation of a same-sex relationship in mainstream Indian cinema.
