Biography
Sonik–Omi was a popular Indian music composer duo consisting of Sonik (25 October 1926 – 9 December 1995) and his nephew Omi. The duo was active primarily in Hindi cinema from the 1960s through the 1980s and was known for creating melodious, commercially successful film soundtracks.
Sonik, who was visually impaired, overcame significant challenges to establish himself in the music industry. Together with Omi, he composed music for more than 100 Hindi films, earning recognition for their blend of traditional Indian melodies, lively orchestration, and memorable songs.
Some of their best-known films include Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya, Aankhon Aankhon Mein, Sunehra Sansar, Lahu Ke Do Rang, Aas Paas, Kranti, and Ajooba. They collaborated with many legendary playback singers, including Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar, and Mahendra Kapoor.
The duo's music was widely appreciated for its versatility, ranging from romantic melodies and devotional songs to energetic dance numbers and patriotic themes. Their contributions helped shape the sound of mainstream Hindi cinema during the 1970s and early 1980s, leaving behind a lasting musical legacy.
